Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: FINE. Dust Jacket Condition: NEAR FINE. First Edition. First American Editions, printed in France with helogravures by Draeger and lithographs by Mourlot. Two volumes, the complete Chagall Bible published over the course of four years in two dedicated double volumes, Verve Magazine 33/34 & 37/38. Both volumes in uncommonly FINE condition. Folio in paper over board covers with specially-commissioned wraparound illustrations by Chagall. Vol. 1: Illustrations for the Bible (1956). [15], 105pp., 16 color & 12 B/W lithos. FINE with very trivial shelf rubbing to the tips and faintest offsetting to endpapers beyond the DJ flaps, otherwise exceedingly clean and sharp with tight binding and bright cover illustration and all lithos present; the uncommon dust jacket has four peeled spots to front with the top infringing on the edge of the title, tips rubbed with a bit of loss, torn about 5' at both sides of the spine, price intact. Vol. 2: [13], 96, [16] pp., 24 color lithos. A FINE copy without qualification, clean, fresh and bright with hinges shockingly tight. DJ with just tivial shelfwear to the tips and three short tears to the tail edge. In 1956, the French publisher and art critic Teriade devoted two issues of his renowned quarterly art journal, Verve, to the Biblical illustrations of his friend Marc Chagall. This first volume, Illustrations for the Bible' was comprised of 16 color and 12 b/w lithographs specially composed for the present work; these lithographs supplemented 105 copperplate etchings that were first inspired by Chagall's spiritually transformative 1931 journey in the Holy Land of Palestine, Syria, and Egypt. The first 65 plates were produced in the 8 years following this trip, with the remaining 40 completed from 1952-1956 at Teriade's prompting. In response to the overwhelming reception of this first volume, Chagall spent the next four years producing an entirely fresh volume of additional scenes from the Scriptures. Together they comprise one of the greatest artistic engagements with the Bible ever produced. Each image in these two volumes reveals a moment of encounter between humans and the divine. The angels, the men and women of the Old Testament, and even the Almighty are portrayed with with intense passion in scenes of violence, lust, betrayal, fear, joy, and love. [Cramer 42; Mourlot 230-277; Sorlier 75].
